Everyday Inspo
Per usual, a simple scroll of my Pinterest homepage led me straight down the rabbit hole about….stamps. Odd, I know.
I saw a “Pin” of an art print, a replica of a rare vintage stamp that brought my mouse to a halt. While I don’t send much snail mail, I certainly receive A LOT of it, yet realized I never took much notice of the parcel currency.
As I hovered over the image and looked closer, I observed the intricate design elements, all of which confined to the tiny canvas. This was a prime example of the design synergies we interact with everyday, many of which are often overlooked.
As a extremely visual person, I’m namely fond of magazines and editorials. That said, I’m also fascinated by logo design, advertisements, album covers - you name it! Stamps though - I never really thought about it. In regards to the small scale works, I did some research and found that just like most mundane things, a lot goes into the creation of a stamp.
I didn’t realize, but it makes sense, that the US Postal Service has an Art Director. The AD comes up with a theme and then collaborates with individual artists from across the country to create the perfect design. I couldn’t find much on how they land on, who or what, the focal point will be, but appreciate the vast array of illustrations from the more traditional commemorative stamps (leaders, landmarks, and holiday varieties) to the seemingly popular use of animals, celebrities & cultural icons - even abstract designs.
I hope I didn’t bore you too much, but should you:
1. Happen to stumble across this
2. Are a talented graphic designer or artist
I strongly suggest you look into ways to get your work noticed for this once in a lifetime design assignment. If you do get hired based on this suggestion, please send a book of stamps. :) As for me, I’ll be referring back to this compilation of my favorites to simply serve as inspiration.
